UPDATE January 11, 2021

New Covid-19 Vaccine Information From the New York State Department of Health

NEW: Vaccination Hotline launches today at 4:00 PM. Call to schedule vaccination appointments for eligible New Yorkers: 1-833-NYS-4-VAX (1-833-697-4829).

While the vaccination process is underway, every New Yorker should wear a mask, social distance and avoid small and large gatherings.
Two vaccines have been authorized by the FDA and approved by New York State’s independent COVID-19 Clinical Advisory Task Force: One that was developed by Pfizer and BioNTech and another that was developed by Moderna. Both vaccines require two doses.

As of January 11, 2021, New Yorkers in Phase 1a and segments of Phase 1b are eligible for the vaccines. ALL VACCINATIONS ARE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Eligible groups include doctors, nurses and health care workers, people age 75 and over, first responders, teachers, public transit workers, grocery store workers and public safety workers. Residents and staff at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities will continue to be vaccinated through a federal program, which the state is providing resources to accelerate.

Health care workers who are part of Phase 1a will continue to be vaccinated at hospitals and other clinical settings.
People age 75 and over will primarily be vaccinated at pharmacies and other sites that are part of the “retail network.” Use our online tool to find a location.

Public employees (for example, police departments, public school teachers and MTA employees) will primarily be vaccinated through their groups’ relevant health programs or as organized by their unions.

New York is currently in Phase1A of vaccine distribution.
Eligible New Yorkers in Phase 1A are:
High-risk hospital workers (emergency room workers, ICU staff and Pulmonary Department staff)
Residents and staff at nursing homes and other congregate care facilities
Federally Qualified Health Center employees
EMS workers
Coroners, medical examiners, and certain funeral workers
Staff and residents at OPWDD, OMH, and OASAS facilities
Urgent Care providers
Individuals administering COVID-19 vaccines, including local health department staff

UPDATE
On Monday, January 11, we will enter Phase1B.
Eligible under 1B are:
Teachers and education workers
First responders, including police and firefighters
Public safety workers
Public transit workers
People 75 and older
However, the Governor has indicated that while people eligible under 1B can start to make appointments Monday to receive the vaccine, they may not actually take place for weeks or even months, as the priority is to first complete distribution to Phase 1A health care workers. Supplies received from the Federal government have been limited to 300,000 doses each week. 3.2 million people are in the 1B category. As of today, 479,000 doses have been distributed out of 900,000 given to New York. Supplies of the vaccine are under the control of the Federal government, which provides it to states to distribute.
This time frame and supply situation are subject to change based upon the incoming Biden administration’s announcement that it will speed up distribution by releasing nearly all available doses, rather than retaining half for second doses.
