TOWN OF RAMAPO IRISH TWINNING COMMITTEE

ESSAY CONTEST

WRITE AN ESSAY (ABOUT 250 WORDS OR LESS ON ONE SHEET OF PAPER) DESCRIBING:

“WHY I WANT TO VISIT IRELAND”

Contest is open to all 10th and 11th grade students living in the Town of Ramapo.

Five lucky students will be chosen for a ten-day all-expense-paid trip to Ireland during the summer of 2005. (Trip will be during the month of July or August.)

THE RULES

  1. Student must be a resident of the Town of Ramapo.

  2. Student must be a sophomore or a junior in “good standing.

  3. The topic of the essay is “Why I want to visit Ireland.”

  4. The essay should be one page, not to exceed 250 words.

  5. Never been to Ireland or planning to visit within the next 12 months.

  6. Put your name, school and phone number on the back of the essay in pencil. Each essay will be assigned a code number. All reference to the student's name and school will be deleted from the entry when submitted to the Irish Twinning Committee. The office staff at the Cultural Arts Building will be the only ones who will know your identity.

  7. Student must submit the essay to your school's designated liaison.

  8. The essay is due by Tuesday, February 1, 2005.

  9. Completed essays must be delivered to the Cultural Arts Building, 3 DeBaun Ave., Suffern (the building after Ramapo Valley Ambulance Corps.) by the designated school liaison by Tuesday, February 1, 2005.

  10. Members of the Irish Twinning Committee will judge the essays. During the week of February 7, 2005, committee members will pick up the essays.

  11. At the following twinning committee meeting, ten essays will be chosen as

Semi-finalists. There will be five finalists and five alternates chosen. Finalists will be determined and chosen by means of an interview process.

  1. Notification of the winners will be made. Each winner will be expected to

Attend the Town Board meeting of March 23, 2005, Irish Heritage Night, to be introduced to the public.
