Overseas Trips!

Four Town of Ramapo Twinning Committees are planning fund-raising activities to send high school students overseas to their “twin” cities!

The Town of Ramapo Irish Twinning Committee, the Town of Ramapo Italian Twinning Committee, the Town of Ramapo Philippine-American Twinning Committee and the Town of Ramapo India Twinning Association are all planning trips overseas in 2005 for 10^th and 11^th grade students who are Ramapo residents.

Each Twinning Committee holds an essay contest, selects semi-finalists, then selects finalists and alternates through an interview process. The teenagers, who win an all-expense paid trip, stay from 10 days to three weeks with host families to learn what life is like as a teenager in these countries. A chaperone from the committee accompanies the students. The committees overseas take responsibility for touring, meals and teaching the students about their culture and country.

These twinning committees have been in existence from three to 13 years! The students, who host our students overseas, come to Ramapo in alternate years. The Twinning Program has been quite successful! The Israeli Twinning Committee and the African Heritage Twinning Committee will be hosting students from Israel and Ghana in the spring and summer 2005.

The first essay contest of the year for a 10-day trip to Ireland will be sent to all of the public and private high schools the second week in January. The essays are due by February 1. A copy of the rules will be posted on the Town of Ramapo website - www.ramapo.org/twinning/irish. The Essay Contest Rules will be sent to the Principal's office in each high school for distribution to the students.
