Safeguard Rockland's Quality of Life!

The U.S. Air Traffic Control System is broken but the local proposal to shift the F.A.A. flight path from central Rockland to western Rockland over Sloatsburg, Hillburn and Suffern is unacceptable.

Safeguard Rockland’s Quality of Life

August 6, 2007

The U.S. Air Traffic Control System is broken, increased flight delays nationally have become the norm.  The New York Metro Airports Newark, LaGuardia and JFK, are now serving over 100 million passengers annually.  Newark Airport has the worst on-time performance in the Country, and at JFK 47% of the flights are late or delayed on a regular basis.  The F.A.A. preferred option of changing the flight paths will not appreciably decrease the problem.  Absent Congressional funding for the development of a satellite based air traffic control system, and voluntary /mandatory “cooperation” from the airline industry to reduce a problem they are causing by scheduling more flights than runways can accommodate.  Changing flight paths alone will simply increase the volume of planes in the air, have a negative environmental impact on communities such as Rockland, and not significantly reduce the number of flight delays.  Therefore, I advocate maintaining the status quo, until the severity of the situation sparks action by Congress and the airlines.

The local proposal to shift the F.A.A. flight path from central Rockland to western Rockland over Sloatsburg, Hillburn and Suffern is unacceptable, because it merely shifts a problem from one neighborhood to another.  There should be no additional flights over any part of Rockland County!  Bottom line, local officials must be prepared to take legal action if necessary to safeguard Rockland’s quality of life.  The Town of Ramapo is prepared to do so!
