Ramapo Keeps Getting Greener!
April 21, 2008
Since the beginning of my administration, the Town Board has initiated numerous initiatives designed to keep getting Ramapo greener. Our open space, recreation and historic preservation programs have been the cornerstone of our endeavors. Several years ago I wrote as follows: “Visionary communities throughout the country have come to the realization that the only effective method of preserving open space in perpetuity is through public ownership!” Open space provides significant environmental and health benefits, it combats air pollution, attenuating noise, controlling wind, providing erosion control and moderating temperatures. Open space also protects surface and groundwater resources by filtering trash, debris and chemical pollutants before they enter a water system.
I am proud that since 2003 the Town of Ramapo has purchased over twenty parcels of land, which future generations will enjoy and receive “quality of life” dividends for years to come. A few weeks ago, I went to Albany to meet with Carol Ash, Commissioner of the N.Y.S. Office of Parks & Recreation and Historic Preservation. We have formed a partnership with the Office of Parks to acquire over 500 acres of open space in Torne Valley. The state will contribute $2.6 million dollars toward the purchase of this property.
Our “Keep Ramapo Getting Greener” initiatives include:
· Use of electric cars
· The development of the Ramapo River Greenway Trail, which will connect neighborhoods to local train stations
· Use of LED fixtures in our traffic lights
· Use of geo-thermal heating and cooling in our new DPW building
· Soon, we will be placing solar panels on municipal rooftops
· The Supervisor’s B-Team (Beautification Team) will be working daily to make Ramapo Greener and Cleaner!
