Open Space Becomes Farmland in Chestnut Ridge

September 17, 2007

Open Space Becomes Farmland - In 2004, at the urging o f many Chestnut Ridge residents, Mayor Kobre and the Village Board, the Town of Ramapo purchased a nine acre parcel off Pinebrook Road from The Seventh Day Adventists for $1.65 million dollars.

This property has been leased to the Fellowship Community which currently operates the only diversified farm in Rockland County, the Duryea Farm. The Community will use the parcel fro farming activities and conducting educational and recreational programs for Ramapo residents. Soon a row of American Elm Trees will be planted on the area of the property bordering Pinebrook Road. This use typifies the uniqueness of our Open Space, Parkland and Historic Preservation endeavors. We have acquired greenspace, income producing properties such as Camp Scuffy, Parkland, Historic sites such as The Sloat House and environmentally sensitive areas such as the Ramapo wellfields in the Torne Valley.

Many thanks to the residents of Chestnut Ridge who nominated this property for purchase by the Town Board.
